A tool is not a system
Here's the distinction that changes everything. A tool is software you sign up for and are then left to operate: you configure it, connect it, keep it running, and hope you set it up right. A system is that same capability installed into your business by someone who's done it many times, wired to your phone and calendar, tested, and maintained. One you run. One runs for you.
Almost everyone who says "AI didn't work for me" tried a tool. They bought access, hit the setup wall, half-configured it, got a mediocre result, and quit. That's not an AI failure. That's the predictable outcome of being handed a cockpit and told to fly.
The research says this out loud
MIT looked across hundreds of company AI efforts and found the split plainly: systems bought from a specialist or partner reached a real, working result about 67% of the time. Ones built or run in-house from scratch got there only about 22%. Same technology, roughly a third of the success rate, decided entirely by whether someone who'd done it before was the one setting it up.
So the honest read of your flop isn't "AI is overhyped." It's "I was in the 22% because I was doing it the hard way." The exact same capability, installed properly, is a completely different experience.

Being burned once is useful, if you draw the right lesson. The wrong lesson is "AI doesn't work." The right one is "the DIY version doesn't work for me, and I don't have to do it that way."
The whole reason these systems are installed and run for you is that the install is where things break. You already proved you don't want to be the one wrestling with setup. Good, that's the part you hand off. What's left is the result, which is the only part you wanted in the first place.
Don't let a bad tool close the door on the thing the tool was pretending to be.
