Customers Who Arrive From AI Convert About 50% Better. There Just Aren't Many Yet.
Shopify's Q1 2026 data found AI-referred visitors convert at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search, with 14% higher order values, and AI-referred orders growing nearly 13x year over year. Shopify also says the honest part out loud: the volume is still small.
Founder, Simmons Solutions. Three years hands-on with AI.
In plain terms: People who find a business through an AI assistant buy more often, and spend more, than people who arrive from a normal Google search. The number of those people is still small, but it is growing fast. This is about why they are worth more and what that means before the wave arrives.
There is a customer walking around right now who is worth more than the ones you are used to, and almost nobody is set up to catch them.
Shopify published its Q1 2026 commerce data and the numbers are unusual (report). Visitors who arrived from an AI assistant converted at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search. Their orders carried 14% higher average value. AI-referred orders grew nearly 13x year over year, and sessions grew more than 8x.
That advantage held across 23 of 25 merchant categories, which matters. One or two categories could be a fluke. Twenty-three is a pattern.
Why the AI customer is a better customer
The mechanism is not mysterious once you look at what the assistant actually does.
A Google search hands you ten blue links and you start browsing. You are still deciding. You bounce between four sites, get distracted, and half the time you never buy anything from anyone.
An AI assistant does the comparing before you ever arrive. By the time it hands you a name, the deciding is mostly over. Shopify found that more than 55% of AI-referred sessions began directly on a product page, versus about 20% for organic search. They skipped the browsing entirely.
In your world, that is the difference between someone shopping around for a fence company and someone who has already been told you are the one to call. Same person, completely different phone call.
The honest part, which Shopify says themselves
The volume is still small. Organic search is dominant and it is not close. This is a high-quality trickle, not a flood.
So the correct read is not "abandon what works." It is that a channel with unusually good customers is growing at 13x a year, and the cost of being findable in it right now is close to zero, because almost nobody in your category has bothered.
The other honest caveat: that Shopify data is e-commerce. Somebody buying a product online is not identical to somebody hiring a contractor. The behavior transfers directionally, not exactly, and I would rather say that than pretend the number is a promise.
What does transfer is the local version, which we covered earlier this week: 45% of people now use AI to find local businesses, up from 6% a year ago. The trickle in local is arriving faster than the trickle in retail did.
What actually earns the mention
You cannot buy your way into an AI recommendation. What you can do is make yourself easy to recommend, which comes down to three unglamorous things: your basic information agreeing with itself everywhere it appears, other people describing what you do, and your own site answering the specific question a customer would actually ask.
None of that is exciting. All of it is cheap. And the window where it is still cheap is the part that closes.
If you want the plain-English version of that work, it's a system I install.
