How Do I Get My Business Recommended by ChatGPT?

Owners are starting to ask this exact question, and most of the answers online are guesswork. Here is the honest version, from someone who does this work on his own business: what actually influences AI recommendations, what is snake oil, and the three unglamorous things that move it.

In plain terms: You cannot pay or submit your way into ChatGPT's recommendations. But the machines choose from what they can read and verify about you, and you control that. Three jobs, all boring, all cheap.

Somebody asks ChatGPT "who should I call to fix my fence in Mesa?" and it names two companies. If you own the third company, this page is for you.

First, the honest disclaimers, because this category is full of certainty that nobody has earned. There is no submission form. There is no ad slot. Anyone selling you guaranteed placement in an AI answer is guessing on your dime. I run this playbook on my own business, I have watched the first AI-referred visitors arrive in my own analytics, and I will still not promise you a placement, because nobody honestly can.

What I can tell you is how these systems choose, because it is not a mystery: they recommend businesses they can read, understand, and corroborate. The word I keep coming back to is legible.

The three jobs

1. Make your facts agree with themselves everywhere. Your name, phone, hours, services, and service area, identical on your site, your Google Business Profile, and every directory that mentions you. An AI that finds three different phone numbers has no way to know which is real, so it names a competitor with cleaner facts. This is the least glamorous work in marketing, and for AI visibility it is the floor.

2. Get other people describing you. The machines weigh what third parties say about you far more than what you say about yourself, for the same reason you would. Reviews you actually replied to. A mention in a local article. A supplier page that lists you. When ChatGPT explains who it recommends and why, that outside footprint is what it quotes. Notably, ChatGPT's web answers lean on Bing's index, where almost none of your competitors have ever set foot.

3. Answer real questions in plain words on your own site. Not "quality service since 1998." The actual questions customers type, phrased the way they type them, answered directly. AI answers are assembled from passages that already answer the question; give it one.

Why bother now

The traffic is small today, and anyone who says otherwise is selling. But Shopify's Q1 data showed AI-referred visitors converting at nearly 50% higher rates than search traffic, because the AI does the comparing before they arrive. The customer it sends you is not shopping around. They were told you are the one to call.

Small volume, unusually good customers, and almost zero competition for the work, because the work is boring. That is the best entry window there is.

The full version of this, done for you, is a system I install. But even if we never talk, do job one this month. It is a spreadsheet, an afternoon, and it is the difference between the machines reading your business or skipping it.
